The Liberation Project Acoustic Band

In line with the broader Liberation Project, the Cape Town International Jazz Festival have specifically commissioned The Liberation Project Acoustic Band as a smaller more unplugged precursor to the big electric setup due to hit our shores later on in the year. The band comprises some of the South African based musicians who featured on the record in the form of Sipho Hotstix Mabuse, Tony Cedras, Neill Solomon, Dan Chiorboli, Tebogo Sedumedi, Bienvenue N’Seka & Keeran Eshwarlall. Roger Lucey will feature as a Special Guest performing Thabane, one of his songs that was banned by the apartheid authorities.

Music played a key role in both driving change and creating harmony during the Apartheid Regime. Music communicated messages through lyrics that had politically subversive meanings. It also allowed international audiences a view into the injustices suffered by the oppressed racial groups in South Africa. Music united South Africans at a time where every other aspect of life was dictated by race and culture. It is with great pride that this project offers us an opportunity to showcase our fight for liberation to the world.

This festival set is dedicated to Ray Phiri who sadly passed away during the making of the album.
